Viburnum Spring Bouquet
Viburnum tinus
.
Upright-rounded habit and lustrous dark green leaves. Pink flower buds form in the winter and open to clusters of small white flowers in late winter to early spring. Green foliage with red stems. Compact habit. Pink buds in winter open to clusters of white flowers.
Young shrubs grow mostly upright, eventually spreading slightly to form a vase shape. Although old plants reach to about 15 feet tall, most grow no taller than about 5-10 feet. Because plants grow slowly, they require little pruning to maintain the upright form. Prune after flowers fade. Prune out dead or broken branches or to shape plant. It is very forgiving of being cut and springs back swiftly, so it is a good choice for long-lasting cuttings for bouquets.
The buds persist throughout the winter as large flattened clusters of small pink berry-like balls. These buds remain closed most of the winter but are so brightly pink they look like bright pink flowers. These pink round buds will open in March & April into white mildly honey-scented flowers.
In the summer little metallic blue berries develop & those will linger clear through to autumn, with a few still on the branches in winter though by then having turned black.
