Fothergilla Mt.Airy
Fothergilla 'Mt. Airy'
Fothergilla is one of the first shrubs to bloom come springtime, and one of the last to drop its leaves in late fall. Not only is she beautiful, but it also provides a rich source of early-season nectar for bees and other insects; all held within pretty, bottle-brush, green-white blooms. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, it prefers moist but well drained soil, and performs best in sun to light shade, though it is highly adaptable so will thrive in part shade.
Fothergilla is a vigorous deciduous shrub that rows 4-5' tall and is noted for its profuse spring flowering, excellent summer foliage, excellent fall color and consistently upright habit. Flowers have a honey-scented fragrance. Leathery leaves are dark green above and blueish gray beneath. Foliage turns excellent shades of yellow, orange and red-purple in fall.
It has a strong upright habit, as wide as it gets tall. The leaves in spring & summer are a wonderful bluish green adding excellent texture to an array of shrubs. The foliage turns the most startling orange, red, purple & yellow in autumn.
